Rehearsals: Monday and Wednesday night and Sunday afternoon (more in the last 3 weeks before the show)

Please note: The rehearsal period for Spamalot includes the June school holidays. All prospective cast members must be available for scheduled rehearsals over this period.

Auditions: Everyone will be asked to do a solo audition (i.e. there will be no “chorus only” auditions).

Everyone will be asked to attend a dance audition (dance auditions will be split in 2 – one for specialist dancers, one for silly movers)

Vocal:  Material available now from Katie Boyd -  0402804600 email  katiejb@gmail.com
If we stop you half way through, please do not take it personally.  We are EXCELLENT at our jobs (no really) and we only need a few moments to see what you can do.   PS Learn your song off by heart!  Extra points will be awarded for people who are prepared!

Dance (1)/Movement (2): You will be asked to attend one of the dance auditions

This will be based on:

 (a) Your stated experience and training,
 (b) The parts you are auditioning for,
 (c) Megan’s mood, and
 (d) Nothing else

The show will be peppered with Python style movement, drawn from all of their media.  So if you cannot dance and you are going for a non-dancing role, you will still be required to do SOMETHING, especially a Silly Walk.

Acting: You must prepare a joke or funny story (absolute max of 1minute – and we’ll be REALLY annoyed if we have to stop you before we hear the punchline!) – and KEEP IT CLEAN! Of course, your acting during the singing and dancing will also be a major consideration.
Other:This show is a love-letter to Monty Python (with a nudge and a wink to classic Broadway)...If you have NEVER/RARELY seen Monty Python before, it is recommended that you watch as much as you can.   The show draws heavily from ALL sorts of Python, so you will appreciate more of the show, the more you watch.  "Holy Grail" is an obvious start, and "Life of Brian" is great, but also look on YouTube for some of their famous sketches.

Characters
All parts require gusto - a strong singing voice and the ability to earnestly deliver a funny line with great timing...  Comedy is a serious business!

The main knights are cast much like the original Monty Python boys - playing most of the OTHER parts as well.  All of the actors who play multiple roles MUST be versatile - each must have a plethora of distinct character voices at their command...

EVERYONE (except the Lady of the Lake) who speaks/sings will need some sort of an English accent.  Welsh is also acceptable.  We won't mock you for it. Much.

King Arthur
Character Info:   King of the Britons. He is your King. Very strong willed, earnest and charismatic.  A romantic.  Has a problem with certain mathematical problems (e.g. counting), but is not thick as he can keep up in a philosophical discussion about African swallows....sort of...
Vocal Ability:  Baritone.  Low G - F  Notable Solos: "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life", "I'm All Alone", "The Song That Goes Like This (Reprise)"
Dance Ability: Basic movement ability. Age: 30s+

Galahad / King of Swamp Castle / Black Knight ("Palin")
Character Info: Sir (Dennis) Galahad, 37, is a knight with a difference.  Once a politically aware peasant, now a dashingly handsome, brave knight...   The King of Swamp Castle is an impatient, bully of a father, who hates singing...
Vocal Ability:  High Baritone/Tenor    C - G#   Also one Top B.
Notable Solo: "The Song That Goes Like This"
Dance Ability: Basic movement ability. Age: late 20s+

Lancelot / The French Taunter / Knight of Ni / Tim the Enchanter ("Cleese")

Character Info: Sir Lancelot the Homicidally Brave: A near psychopathic knight... may be over compensating for some queer reason.   Must have an OUTRRRRRAGEOUS French Accent...  AND an equally HOOTS-Oche-Aye--the-NOOOO Scottish Accent!
Vocal Ability:  Baritone.  C - F
Dance Ability: Competent dancer - can pull of style and strong character work. Ability to disco dance/hustle a plus. Age: late 20s+

Sir Robin / 1st Sentry / 1st Guard / Brother Maynard ("Idle")

Character Info: Sir Robin: the Not-Quite-So-Brave-As-Sir-Lancelot, who slew the vicious chicken of Bristol, and who personally wet himself at the battle of Baden Hill.  Get the picture?  He's a bit of a coward, but wants ever-so-much to be seen as a brave knight.  He is the one with all the knowledge of the strange and fabulous "Broad-way".
Vocal Ability:  Baritone.  C - F  Notable Solo: "You Won't Succeed on Broadway"
Dance Ability: The best dancer of all the Knights.  Jazz would be good.  Tap would be excellent. Age: late 20s+

Patsy / Mayor of Finland / 2nd Guard ("Gilliam")
Character Info: King Arthur's trusty steed... err... servant.  Must be able to wield coconuts.  Arthur's long-suffering under-appreciated companion.
Vocal Ability:  Baritone.  D - F   Notable Solos: "I'm All Alone", "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life".  Must be able to whistle!
Dance Ability: Tap required, but we can fake it if we need to...  Age: late 20s+

Bedevere / Mrs Galahad / Concorde ("Jones")

Character Info: Sir Bedevere: The Wise (and strangely flatulent).  The clever, logical knight... or so he thinks...   Must have a strong “ Ratbag” voice for Mrs Galahad.
Vocal Ability:  Baritone.   One solo line only, 4 bars long in the middle of "All For One".
Dance Ability: Basic movement ability. Age: 30s+

The Historian / Prince Herbert / Not Dead Fred / Lead Minstrel / French Taunter's BFF
Character Info: Prince Herbert: the wet, young, down-trodden, and slightly pathetic.  He's hopeful, optimistic and has a love of singing.   Not Dead Fred - the confident, singing and dancing not-a-corpse who becomes Sir Robin's insensitive Lead Minstrel...
Vocal Ability:  Tenor. C - Top B.  Must have strong falsetto teeth   Notable Solos: "Not Yet Dead", "Brave Sir Robin", "Where Are You".
Dance Ability: Basic movement ability. Age: 20s+

Lady of the Lake
Character Info: The Diva of all Diva's.  Strong, beautiful, sexy...  She is Woman, hear her belt.  So far over the top, she's come round again, and gone over the top again...  She's Liza (with a Z) on speed.  More brassy than a bronze statue of Ethel Merman's trumpet.  She's the Watery Tart of legend... The only American accent in the show...
Vocal Ability:  Belter.  Low A - top G#.  Also a top B in Head voice.
Notable Solos: "Come With Me", "The Song That Goes Like This", "Find Your Grail", "Whatever Happened To My Part."
Dance Ability: Basic to medium movement skill (elegance over fancy footwork), but she should move like she's the best dancer in the world...
Age: 20s-30s

Dancer/Ensemble Persons (6M / 6F) or (5M / 7F) or (8M/8F) or .....
Character Info: Dancers will be extras and other characters not listed above (Laker girls, dead bodies, Knights of Ni, nuns, minstrels, Lance’s Latin boys, etc)
Vocal Ability: Yes please.
Dance Ability - Males: Tap and basic all-rounders.  Acrobatics a bonus.  Footwork impeccable...
Dance Ability - Females: Everything!  Tap, ballet, jazz, cheerleading, etc, etc, the ability to pick up ANY moves.
Age: Any.
Other: Ability to play Guitar or Mandolin or Flute or Recorder or Tin Whistle or Tambourine looked on favourably.

Other Ensemble Persons.  Up to 4 of them (M &/or F) – could be some of the dancers
Character Info:   Stage crew, special effects operators, puppeteers, extras, Sir Bors, Sir Not-Appearing, Minstrels, Knights, Dead-people, Monks, etc)
Vocal AbilityYes please.
Dance Ability: Basic movement ability/strong physical characterisation skill.
Age: Any.
Other: Ability to play Guitar or Mandolin or Flute or Recorder or Tin Whistle or Tambourine looked on favourably.

*********Audition Songs**********

King Arthur - All Alone

Patsy - Always Look on the Bright Side of Life
- All Alone

Robin - You Won't Succeed on Broadway

Lancelot - Not Yet Dead
- His Name is Lancelot

People interested in Galahad and Bedevere should audition with: Brave Sir Robin and Not Yet Dead (main parts of the song)

Galahad will also need to be able to sing: "The Song that Goes Like This" for call backs.

Lady of the Lake - Find Your Grail
- The Song that Goes like This (callbacks)

The Historian/Not Dead Fred/the Minstrel.
- Not Yet Dead
- Brave Sir Robin
ENSEMBLE: Men - please prepare as per 'The Historian'
Women - if you have trouble with "Find Your Grail" then have a look at "whatever happened to my Part."

Effectively there is no difference between an ensemble audition and a lead audition. Ladies, don't panic, we know you're not all Divas, and we won't expect you to sing it like Sara Ramirez! We probably won't need to hear the whole song anyway.
