The Townsville Choral Society. The Choral Society brings together ordinary people from within the community who share a love of choral music. It started in 1906 (as the Townsville Musical Union) and in 2006 celebrated its centenary year. In this time the society has produced 76 musicals and thousands of choral items to entertain the public.ActivitiesEisteddfod - held at Easter in Townsville, Cairns and Mackay on a rotational basis. A choir of about 60+ voices rehearses under the baton of Cheryl Platt from January to March/April. The public can always experience the best choral music in the city each year at the Pre-Eisteddfod concert held in the Society hall usually the Saturday before Easter
The 2005 eisteddfod choir in Cairns Musicals - two musicals are produced each year and performed at the Townsville Civic Theatre in January/Febrary and the second around June/July. Auditions are held and rehearsals are from 8 to 10 weeks. Usually from 5 to 9 productions with full orchestra/band. Great fun for the audience and the cast.Theatre Restaurant - held in the Society Hall each year in October/November. This is a smaller production of the review type with various musical items, skits and comedies held over 4 to 5 weekends on Friday and Saturday nights. A meal is served and the audience (max 150) has a great time.Choralaires - a smaller group of mostly retired members who meet on Mondays as a smaller choir for their own entertainment and to produce occasional concerts.Other - New Year's Eve Concert, Carols by Candlelight and other occasional concerts fill our calendar for the year.

NEW MEMBERSThe society is always on the lookout for new members. As long as you are a keen singer, you do not have to be a soloist- You need to have the rudiments of singing and be able to hold a melody - the conductor will do the rest. Call the secretary and arrange to come to rehearsals to listen and try for yourself. Membership is $55 per year and for this you get to rehearse in an airconditioned hall. |
